The woman stood at the window, looking into the courtyard where nothing had changed for a long time. The same trees, the same benches, the same people passing by without even noticing her. In that moment, her daughter entered the room.
— Mom, pack your things, — she said with almost no emotion. — I’m taking you out for a bit, you need some rest. A change of scenery.
The old woman looked at her in surprise, but a spark of hope flickered in her eyes. It had been a long time since she had heard a kind word from her daughter.
— Really? Where are we going? — she asked quietly.
— You’ll see, — the daughter replied briefly, already turning away.
The old woman slowly began packing her things. She folded her clothes carefully, as if afraid of making a mistake. Deep inside, she wanted to believe it was truly care and nothing else.
After an hour, they were already on the road. At first, everything felt familiar — the city, traffic lights, known streets. But then the houses disappeared, the road grew emptier, and only fields and scattered trees remained around them.
The old woman frowned and asked cautiously:
— ARE WE SURE WE’RE ON THE RIGHT ROAD? THIS DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A PLACE TO REST…
The daughter gripped the steering wheel tighter.
— Mom, just be quiet, okay?
After that, silence filled the car. Only the sound of the road and occasional gusts of wind could be heard.
After a while, the car turned onto an almost empty country road. No cars, no people. Just a long stretch disappearing into the distance.
And suddenly, the daughter stopped abruptly.
— Get out, — she said coldly.
The old woman froze.
— What? Why?
— I said, get out.
There was no doubt in her voice.
— Daughter… I don’t understand… — the old woman’s voice began to tremble.
— Enough, — the daughter cut her off sharply. — I can’t do this anymore. You’re just in the way.
— Please… don’t leave me here…
But the daughter had already opened the door, grabbed her arm, and practically pushed her outside. The old woman lost her balance and almost fell onto the gravel.
— I’m sorry, but it’s better this way, — the daughter said without even looking at her.
THE DOOR SLAMMED SHUT. THE CAR JERKED AWAY. THE OLD WOMAN WAS LEFT ALONE IN THE MIDDLE OF AN EMPTY ROAD.
The wind tore through her gray hair, her hands trembled, and tears filled her eyes.
— God… why?… — she whispered.
But the daughter had no idea what would soon happen to her. 🥲😮
The old woman stood for a long time by the roadside until her daughter’s car finally disappeared around the bend. At first, she just stared into the distance, hoping it was all a mistake and her daughter would come back. But the minutes passed, the road stayed empty, and finally she slowly pulled an old phone from her pocket.
Her hands shook, but she still dialed a number.
— Hello… — she said softly, trying to control her voice. — It’s me… I need help…
There was a short pause on the other end, then the voice turned serious.
— AUNT? WHERE ARE YOU? WHAT HAPPENED?
She didn’t explain everything at once. She only gave the location and added quietly:
— I’m alone… on the country road…
Within forty minutes, a luxury car pulled up beside her. A man in an elegant suit stepped out — her nephew, whom she had not seen in many years. He quickly walked toward her, gently placed his hands on her shoulders, and looked into her eyes.
— Who did this to you?
The old woman lowered her gaze and whispered almost inaudibly:
— My daughter…
He said nothing, only nodded briefly, as if he had already made a decision.
THAT SAME EVENING SHE WAS IN A WARM HOUSE, HOLDING A CUP OF HOT TEA. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME, THERE WERE PEOPLE AROUND HER WHO TREATED HER WITH RESPECT AND NOT IRRITATION. THE NEPHEW DID NOT ASK UNNECESSARY QUESTIONS, BUT THE NEXT DAY A LAWYER CAME TO SEE HER.
The documents were laid out directly on the table.
The old woman looked at the papers for a long time, as if reviewing her entire life — every day, every sacrifice she had made for her daughter.
— Are you sure? — the lawyer asked calmly.
She lifted her gaze.
And in that moment, there was neither fear nor doubt in her eyes.
— Yes… now I am sure.
The signature was steady and calm.
A FEW DAYS LATER SHE RETURNED TO HER HOUSE. BUT NO LONGER ALONE AND NO LONGER AS THE WOMAN WHO COULD SIMPLY BE THROWN OUT OF A CAR.
That day, the door suddenly opened.
On the threshold stood her daughter with suitcases, irritated and convinced everything was still hers.
— Mom, where have you been? I don’t understand what this is supposed to be…
She stopped when she saw unfamiliar people in the house.
The nephew stepped forward calmly.
— You should pack your things and leave, — he said in a steady voice.
— This is my house, who do you think you are?! — the daughter snapped.
HE HANDED HER THE DOCUMENTS.
— Not anymore.
She snatched the papers, scanned them… and turned pale.
— This is… a mistake… Mom, you can’t do this…
The old woman stepped forward slowly.
Now she looked at her daughter with the same calm gaze with which she had once been abandoned on the road.
— I could, — she said quietly. — And I did.
— But where am I supposed to go now? — her voice broke.
THE OLD WOMAN PAUSED FOR A MOMENT… AND THEN ANSWERED:
— To the place where you left me.
