The day the familiar, long-forgotten sound of an old motorcycle suddenly echoed down the dusty village street, everyone was shocked. People peeked out of gates, some stopped at the well, and even old Nina set down her bucket when she recognized the clattering engine.
It was the old Stepan.
He was already seventy. After his wife’s death, he hardly spoke to anyone, wore the same old coat for years, and procrastinated even the simplest tasks. Every spring the roof of his house leaked, the fence leaned, and the garden was overgrown.
But that day, it didn’t surprise anyone that Stepan was suddenly riding his old motorcycle again.
Behind him sat a woman.
She looked about thirty, wore a blue dress with daisies, and held onto the old man as if it were perfectly normal. The motorcycle moved slowly; sometimes the engine sputtered, sometimes they had to push it with their feet because the engine seemed unwilling to work.
When they stopped in front of Stepan’s yard, a small crowd had already gathered along the neighboring fences.
— My God, he’s lost his mind… — whispered old Nina.
— IS THAT HIS GRANDDAUGHTER? — ASKED OLD KOLJA.
But Stepan, as if noticing nothing, took off his helmet, helped the woman off the motorcycle, and said calmly:
— This is Lena. My wife.
For a few seconds, the entire street was so quiet that not even the chickens clucked. Then whispers began.
Some laughed, some shook their heads, others openly said the old man had lost his mind after his wife’s death.
— She’s forty years younger than him!
— Probably after his money.
— Let’s see how long she stays here.
Lena heard everything, but she only smiled calmly and greeted everyone as if nothing unusual had happened.
Yet a few days later, the whole village was shocked again when they saw what was happening in the old man’s house and what his new wife was doing 😨😢
IN THE FIRST TWO DAYS, THE ENTIRE VILLAGE EXPECTED A SCANDAL. BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. ON THE THIRD DAY, THE NEIGHBORS NOTICED SOMETHING STRANGE.
In the morning, smoke already rose from the chimney, the window smelled of freshly baked bread, and someone was hanging freshly washed laundry in the yard.
It was Lena.
She didn’t sit idle for a single minute. First, she cleaned the windows that hadn’t been touched for ten years, then cleared out the old barn, and after that, removed half of the unnecessary clutter from the storage room.
But the most astonishing thing happened on the fifth day.
Lena stepped into the yard, looked at the roof, and said to Stepan:
— You can’t live like this. When it rains, your house is almost like being outside.
— I always wanted to… — mumbled the old man.
— THEN START NOW. TODAY.
And that very day, the entire village witnessed an incredible scene.
Stepan stood on the roof. The same Stepan who had walked hunched over for years, claiming he had no strength for anything. He replaced boards, fixed metal pieces, cursed at the nails, and… laughed while doing it.
Below, Lena handed him the tools.
A week later, a new fence stood in the yard. Two weeks later, the garden was plowed and planted. The house smelled of cake, and in the evenings, neighbors stayed at Stepan’s table because Lena spoke in a way that made people linger.
One evening, old Nina quietly said to Kolja:
— You know… at first, I thought our neighbor had gone mad.
— And now?
OLD NINA LOOKED INTO STEPAN’S YARD, WHERE HE WAS LAUGHING WHILE FIXING THE OLD MOTORCYCLE, AND LENA STOOD NEXT TO HIM, TELLING HIM SOMETHING.
— Now I think… she just gave him his life back.
In that moment, the whole village understood something no one had expected.
The old Stepan, whom everyone thought lonely and almost broken, had suddenly become the happiest man on the entire street.
