I tried to push him away and even got angry at him, but just a few seconds later something completely unexpected happened.
I was already about halfway up the ladder, reaching with the pruning shears toward the dry branches of the old apple tree next to the house. The morning had felt strange from the very beginning. The sky was covered with heavy gray clouds, the air was still and damp, as if a heavy rain was about to start. I could sense the weather changing, but I still decided to finish the job because those dry branches should have been removed long ago.
I had set up the ladder earlier that morning, carefully leaning it against the trunk and checking that it stood firmly. I had climbed a few steps and was just about to cut the first branch when I suddenly felt someone pulling at my pants from behind.
I turned around and for a moment I was completely startled.
My dog was trying to follow me up the ladder.
His paws slipped on the metal steps, his claws scraped against the surface, and his eyes were wide open, staring straight up at me.
“Hey, what are you doing up there?” I said with a nervous smile. “Get down.”
I waved my hand, hoping he would go back, but the dog didn’t move an inch. On the contrary, he climbed a little higher, placed his front paws on the ladder, and suddenly grabbed my pants with his teeth.
He started pulling. Hard.
I FLINCHED AND ALMOST LOST MY BALANCE.
I flinched and almost lost my balance.
“Have you gone crazy? Let go!” I said angrily.
But he didn’t let go. The dog pulled me downward, braced his paws against the ladder, and kept barking as if he wanted to stop me at any cost.
At first, I got angry, but after a few seconds I realized this had nothing to do with playing. He had never behaved like this before. There was something different in his eyes.
As if he was trying to tell me something.
I tried once more to climb higher, but immediately the dog yanked at my pants again, pulling so suddenly that I instinctively grabbed the ladder with both hands.
I sighed heavily and started climbing down again.
“Alright, that’s enough,” I muttered. “If you don’t calm down, I’ll lock you up.”
THE DOG LOWERED HIS HEAD AS IF HE FELT GUILTY, BUT I STILL TOOK HIM TO HIS KENNEL AND CLOSED THE DOOR.
The dog lowered his head as if he felt guilty, but I still led him to his kennel and shut the door. I thought that now I could finally continue working in peace.
But at that very moment something happened that frightened me and suddenly made me understand why my dog had been acting so strangely. You can find the continuation of this unusual story in the first comment.
I walked back to the ladder and placed my foot on the first step. And at that exact second, I heard a loud, sharp crack above my head.
The sound was dry and harsh, like something snapping in two. Instinctively, I looked up. And I saw a huge dry branch breaking loose from the tree.
It fell exactly where my head had been just a second before. With a loud crash, it hit the ground, shattered into several pieces, and landed just a few centimeters beside me.
My legs immediately went weak. I stood next to the ladder, staring at the massive broken branch while my heart pounded so hard I could hear it in my ears.
Only in that moment did I understand everything. My dog hadn’t been bothering me. He had been trying to stop me.
He had sensed the danger before I did. Maybe he had heard the cracking inside the tree or felt that the branch was about to break. Slowly, I turned toward the kennel.
THE DOG WAS LOOKING AT ME THROUGH THE BARS.
The dog was looking at me through the bars. His eyes were alert and calm, and his tail moved gently, as if he was waiting to see whether I would finally understand.
I walked over, opened the door, and knelt beside him. The dog immediately pressed against me.
I wrapped my arms around his neck and whispered:
– You saved my life.
Since that day, I have never ignored his instincts again.
