Silence filled the small hospital room. A five-year-old boy lay on a snow-white sheet, his eyes wide and exhausted. The doctors had told his parents that the operation was his last chance.
The nurses were preparing him for anesthesia when the boy suddenly whispered:
— Can… Archie come to me?
— Who is Archie, sweetheart? — one of the nurses asked, surprised.
— My dog. I miss him so much. Please… — his lips trembled.
— You know, darling, animals aren’t allowed in the hospital. And you’re very weak, please try to understand… — she explained gently.
The boy turned away, tears shimmering in the corners of his eyes:
— But I… I might never see him again.
THOSE WORDS STRUCK THE NURSE STRAIGHT IN THE HEART. SHE EXCHANGED A GLANCE WITH THE OTHERS AND FINALLY SAID, SURPRISED BY HER OWN DECISION:
— Alright. But only for a minute.
An hour later, the parents brought Archie in. The moment the dog saw his little owner, he jumped onto the bed and pressed himself against him. For the first time in weeks, the boy smiled and hugged him tightly.
Doctors and nurses watched the scene with moist eyes: the bond between a human and a dog was stronger than pain and fear.
But suddenly, Archie became restless. His fur stood on end, he jumped off the bed, and ran to a corner of the room. The surgeon who was supposed to perform the operation stood there. The dog began barking furiously, as if ready to attack him at any moment.
— Get that animal out of here! — the surgeon shouted in fear, stepping back.

Within minutes, the truth became clear: the surgeon had indeed come to work intoxicated. He was immediately removed from the operation and lost his license.
The procedure was postponed. The boy was entrusted to another doctor, and a few days later, the surgery was successful.
