When the young couple stepped onto the bus, the tension was immediately noticeable. The woman held onto a pole with one hand while supporting her belly with the other; her eyes were red from crying, and her movements seemed unsteady, as if she could barely remain on her feet. The man followed closely behind her, not leaving even a step of distance, and there was already anger in his voice.
— Stop right there, I’m not finished, he said sharply, grabbing her by the arm. — How can you just walk away while I’m talking to you?
— Stop it, Mark, she replied quietly but firmly. — I’ve said everything. We’re getting a divorce. I can’t live like this anymore… I’m afraid for my child.
He twisted his face into a smile, but there was nothing kind in it.
— I didn’t give you permission to get a divorce. Who would even want you with your belly? Do you think anyone will take you now? You belong to me, understand?
The woman shook her head, visibly struggling with tears.
— No. I will not live with a man who raises his hand against a woman.
After these words, the man seemed to lose control. His voice grew louder and sharper, and he paid no attention to the people around him or to how his wife was trembling and barely able to stand. He hurled more hurtful words at her while she lowered her gaze, trying not to provoke him further.
THE PASSENGERS EXCHANGED GLANCES. SOME PRETENDED TO LOOK AT THEIR PHONES, OTHERS SECRETLY WATCHED THE SCENE, BUT NO ONE STEPPED IN. EVERYONE HOPED THE SITUATION WOULD SOMEHOW CALM DOWN ON ITS OWN.
And then, suddenly, the man raised his arm, his fist clenched. The movement was fast, almost uncontrolled, and for a moment it seemed as if he would actually strike.
But at that exact moment, something happened that no one had expected. The entire bus seemed frozen in shock 😲😨
An older man, who had been sitting next to the woman and until then had seemed like an ordinary passenger, suddenly stood up. His movement was precise and determined.
He intercepted the man’s arm halfway, as if he had done this many times before, and at the same moment, without hesitation, delivered a short, precise strike to his neck.
The man lost his balance and collapsed between the seats. The bus fell instantly silent, as if someone had turned off the sound.
The older man looked down at him calmly, without haste, but there was such determination in his gaze that no one dared to move.
— Do not dare to lay a hand on a pregnant woman, he said quietly, yet clearly enough for everyone to hear. — She has told you everything. Leave her alone.
THE MAN LAY ON THE FLOOR, CLUTCHING HIS NECK AND GASPING FOR AIR. HE NO LONGER SHOUTED AND MADE NO ATTEMPT TO GET UP IMMEDIATELY, AS IF FOR THE FIRST TIME HE UNDERSTOOD WHAT HE HAD DONE.
When the bus stopped at the next station, he hurriedly got up, avoided any eye contact, and stepped off in silence, as if he feared not only the police but also the gaze of that old man.
The woman remained holding onto the rail, still trembling, and only after a moment did she sit down in the empty seat. She looked at the older man with gratitude. There were still tears in her eyes, but now there was also a sense of relief.
